Bikur Cholim Annual Event 2023

On Saturday night, October 21, 2023 Bikur Cholim of Raritan Valley had its Annual Event Melava Malka at the Pines Manor with almost 400 people in attendance honoring two very special doctors.

The first speaker of the night was Rabbi Klein from Lakewood. He spoke about his own personal experience with Bikur Cholim. His daughter was in a car accident that required her to be at the Children Specialized Hospital for months. He spoke about the volunteers at Bikur Cholim who helped his family with food, and lodging and the constant care which was shown upon them. He even told the captive audience that he was asked if he wanted to do hafrashat challah (taking dough from bread) and partake in this mitzvah.

Our first honoree was Doctor Aliza Leiser, head of Gynecological Oncology at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. She was a tremendous help during COVID as she personally delivered kosher food to  patients as no one was allowed into the hospitals. She checked in on all the patients making sure they had what they needed. Dr Leiser is a true friend to Bikur Cholim and always put her patients needs first.

Our next honoree was Doctor Arkady Broder, head of Gastroenterolgy at St. Peter’s Hospital in New Brunswick. He was also instrumental in helping us during COVID making sure the kosher locker was stocked with food, siddurim, electric candles and all necessary items. Doctor Broder goes above and beyond for Bikur Cholim and his patients.

It was a wonderful evening catered by Giddy’s.

Rededication of Suri Granek a”h plaque

Suri Granek a”h was a driving force for the Bikur Cholim of Raritan Valley. Suri served in many capacities for our organization, in addition to being co-president of Bikur Cholim of Raritan Valley from 2007-2009. On Sunday, January 7, 2018, a ceremony was held at our Bikur Cholim Room in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital to rededicate a plaque in Suri’s memory.

Before the Bikur Cholim Hospitality Room came into being in the summer of 2016, Bikur Cholim served the Jewish patients and their families through our “locker,” a well-used closet that housed a small fridge, some cabinets and shelves, all stocked to the max. The fridge and cabinets held kosher snacks, salads and drinks, and the shelves were home to seforim, current Jewish newspapers and books and games for children. Our locker was truly a blessing for the many families that relied on it for many, many years. It was with much gratitude that the Bikur Cholim locker was dedicated to the memory of our beloved Suri Granek, who worked tirelessly on behalf of Bikur Cholim.

We recall our hakarat ha-tov to all that Suri did as we hang a new plaque in her memory in our new Bikur Cholim room. May Suri’s memory and legacy be an inspiration and a blessing to all those whose lives she touched through her devotion to Bikur Cholim and our community.
